If you have bunion pain, you know how painful they can become. Wear the wrong shoe, or engage in the wrong activity and ouch!
If you have a painful bump on the side your foot, you may have what is commonly called a bunion. So how can you get rid of bunion pain? Well first, let's talk about what a bunion is.
A bunion is a hereditary condition that occurs secondary to the inherited bone structure of the foot. This causes an improper alignment of the foot bones and a large bump to appear where the bone becomes prominent. Secondary deformities such as hammertoes (as seen in the picture on the left) can form if bunions are left untreated or become worse.
Conservative treatment involves wider shoes and padding and can sometimes help alleviate the pain. I have some new silicone-type bunion pads that are really great for relieving the pain associated with bunions and many people use these whenever they have to wear certain shoes that hurt their bunions. I can also make custom orthotics or arch supports to fit into your shoes to help prevent the bunions from getting worse. Bunions do tend to get progressively worse over time and will sometimes cause other problems like hammertoe deformities.
If conservative treatment does not give satisfactory relief, I can perform surgical correction of the bunion. Surgical correction is generally quite successful at not only relieving the foot pain, but also improving the appearance and function of the foot.
